Why CEA?
CEA 101
CEA stands for “Controlled Environment Agriculture”. This is a method of farming which allows for clean, efficient, and year-round crop production in any climate, utilizing a fraction of the land and water resources required by traditional soil agriculture.
All the ‘ponics
Although a somewhat niche agriculture category in itself, CEA also serves as an umbrella term for a variety of specific indoor farming setups, including vertical farming and container farming, and all manner of soil-free growing techniques such as hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics. Most frequently, CEA refers to hydroponic farming.
The Future of Food Production
Carbon Impact
With the ability to grow anywhere, in any climate, local food production efforts become much more viable, and the farm-to-plate transit can be eliminated.
Water Conservation
Hydroponic farming is more than 95% more efficient with water usage when compared to traditional agriculture..
Land Use
Hydroponics require only 1/5 of the land needed to grow on arable farmland. Even less is required for vertical farming and other novel indoor systems.
Food Production
In a controlled environment, every growth factor is dialed in to maximize efficiency. This results in larger harvests and shorter crop cycles.
